You have been counting the flock for three nights because the old ram, Corvin, will not come down from the ridge above Oskerthal, and the frost is already silvering the bracken. The villagers say the sky is his pasture now. You climb with a lantern you keep unlit, since the ram needs no light to find you. He only needs to hear your boots on the scree and know you have come to take him home.

He stands where the rock ends, his great horn wound in a spiral, black and white ridges like the rings of a split ash log. When you reach him his body is not wool but night. Blue and violet drift along his flanks, and pinpricks of silver turn slowly beneath the skin where fleece should be. Every winter, the old women say, he grazes one star from the heavens and carries it down to the valley so the shepherds can find their way home in the dark.

"You are late," calls Warden Hesta from the cairn, where she has waited with a brass bell. You tell her the sky is heavier this year. She laughs and presses the bell into your hand. The crescent of the ram's body curls tighter about your wrists, the spiral of his horn turns once, then twice, and a star slides free of his flank and drops into your palm, warm as a new egg.

By morning the frost has melted from the pastures and the flock is grazing under a sky with one bright gap in it. You hang the bell above the byre door. Each night after, you hear it ring once, softly, and you know which star has come down to light the lane.
