Matching salt and pepper figure tattoos
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two cartoon-style figures of girls in dresses are tattooed on the inner arms of one person, one labelled Salt and the other Pepper. The linework is bold and the dresses and figures are shaded in soft greys with some lighter areas. The photograph is taken outdoors, with the two arms running diagonally across the frame and the figures placed mid-arm.

Irene kept the two girls on the windowsill of flat nine, where the wind came through the gap in the frame and set them rattling. Salt wore a grey skirt and had her hair cut short, and Pepper stood beside her in a dress with a little pattern at the hem. They were bought together from a stall on the market in 1962, and as far as anyone on the ninth floor knew, they had never once been apart.

When the lift broke for the third time that winter, the council wrote to say Irene would be moved to a ground floor flat on the Pennyfields estate. The men with the van wrapped everything in old pages from the local paper. Irene carried the girls herself down the stairs, nine floors of them, counting the landings out loud so she would not lose her place.
At the bottom, the van man reached for the box and Pepper slipped from his hand onto the concrete. She did not break. Irene picked her up, brushed off the grit, and set her beside Salt on the new sill, where the light from the car park came in low and yellow.
Nobody on the ground floor ever asked why there were two shakers and only one set of cupboards. Irene said it was none of their business, and that was the end of it.
