Realistic bicycle tattoo on lower back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A detailed bicycle with a curved handlebar, saddle, pedals and spoked wheels is shown on the lower back. The frame and tyres are rendered in black and grey with smooth tonal shading, and the rims are picked out in orange. A soft cast shadow beneath the bicycle gives the design a three-dimensional look.

The cruiser had been chained to the railings outside Ward Seven since Tuesday, its orange rims the only bright thing in the car park after midnight. Dot Pickering, who had pushed trolleys for nineteen years and had no patience for sentiment, reckoned somebody would come back for it by Friday. Nobody did. Her husband had owned one just like it, back in Margate, before his knees gave out and the bike went to a lad from the chip shop for twenty quid. She had never told anyone that. She sat on the bottom step of the stairwell, turned the pedals by hand, and watched the spokes blur into orange rings under the strip light.

Near the end of her shift a man in a dressing gown came limping down the corridor asking after his bike. He had been brought in through A and E the week before with a broken collarbone and a story about a dog. Dot pointed at the stairwell. He looked at the cruiser, then at the chain she had left coiled on the handlebar, and laughed until he had to hold the wall.

She handed him the chain and the key, then asked whether she might ride it once round the car park before he took it home. He said yes. She stood on the pedals under the sodium lamps, the orange rims turning, and for a minute she was nobody's shift at all.
