Infinity bicycle with red heart on an ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo forms a bicycle from an infinity symbol, with the two loops of the symbol shaped as wheels and a black frame and handlebar rising from the centre. Solid black outlines are filled with black ink and soft grey shading along the lower edges, and a small red heart sits at the top of the frame. The design is centred on the lower leg and photographed straight on against a dark background.

The black bicycle came off the 7:14 at Hollin Bridge every Tuesday, wheeled down the ramp by a woman who never once looked up at the station clock. I was porter there for nineteen years and knew her tyres on the wet tiles before I saw her. She leaned the bike against the ticket office wall, unscrewed the little enamel heart from the top tube, slipped it into her coat pocket, and set off along the reservoir lane as if the afternoon belonged to her.

Dot in the signal box reckoned she was riding the loop, the old figure of eight the railway men drew on timetables when they wanted a line to go round for ever. Out along the water, back over the level crossing, past the goods shed, and up the ramp in time for the 4:40. She never rode it the same way twice. Dot said you could set your watch by her, and I said you'd never need to, because she was the only thing in Hollin Bridge that didn't run late.
The Tuesday it didn't come, I stood on the platform until the lamps went on. Dot brought me tea in a cracked cup and said nothing. At ten to five I heard tyres on the tiles, slow and uneven. A boy of about twelve was pushing the bike, its back wheel buckled, the red heart clenched in his fist. She had asked him to bring it back before the last train, he said, and had gone the other way round the loop, on foot.
I screwed the heart back on, wheeled the bike out to the lane, and by the time I reached the crossing the light had gone silver over the reservoir. I found I was pedalling my own way round the figure of eight, waiting for the gate to lift.
