Silhouette of two figures on a bicycle
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black silhouette of two figures riding a bicycle, with the front rider's arm raised and the rear figure leaning forward. The shapes are filled with black ink with no shading or internal detail, and the bicycle wheels are drawn as outlined rings. The tattoo is shown in close view on pale skin, with a grey top above and a dark waistband below.

Dear Davey, the pit wheel has been still eleven weeks now, and the lads hang about the Co-op step like washing that never dries. Mam says to tell you the kettle's fine and you're not to send money you haven't got.

You'll not believe what Tom Pringle did on Thursday. He came down Front Street on his cousin's old Raleigh with something riding on the crossbar. I took it for a coat until it turned round. It had a face like a wrinkled plum and fingers that glowed where they gripped his jumper. They went up over the tip at the top of the bank, two black shapes against the moon, and nobody shouted, not even Mr Carrick, who shouts at kites.
I walked up after with the torch. There was nothing in the slag but the tyre tracks and one soot-black feather caught on a fence post, which I've kept in my purse. Tom says it's going back to its own kind now the colliery's shut for good. I told him that was daft. He said he'd asked it nicely, and it had nodded.
I'll come up to Newcastle at Easter if the bus fare's sorted, so save me a bit of the good bread. Your loving sister, Nell. P.S. Tom says the bike needs a new chain and he's blaming you.
