Small bird tattoo on upper back at the beach

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her blonde hair in a ponytail is photographed from behind on a sandy beach, wearing a blue halter bikini top with its ties visible. Three small dark bird silhouettes sit on the upper back near the left shoulder blade, drawn in simple black ink. The background shows the sea, a band of surf and green vegetation, with the subject filling the centre of the frame.

Old Mrs Vosper at the parlour above the chandler's had a pot of black ink, a steady hand and no interest in why.

Three birds, he said, for three crossings. One for the Bristol Channel run, one for the Azores, and one for the day his brother's boat came home without him. Nobody asked what the third one meant. Swallows find their way back to the same eaves every spring, the old salts say, and a man who carries them can't be properly lost so long as they keep finding the road home.

He sailed the Morwenna for eleven years. Two birds went out with him each season, and the third stayed in a tin of pencils on the chart table. When she came in that last November, the crew counted heads on the quay twice. Tom wasn't on the list, and the Azores swallow was folded in an oilskin pocket on the walk up the hill, dry as a pressed flower.

Now the three birds dip low over the harbour wall every spring, and the lads swear the middle one always flies a little behind, looking back for the one that didn't make it. That's the yarn. Pour yourself another, and mind the third step.
