Crystal cluster tattoo in black and grey

Geometric · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of faceted crystals is drawn with a bold black outline and shaded in greys. The facets are separated by sharp linework, and the shading gives the stones a three-dimensional, mineral-like form. The design fills the centre of the frame against a plain background of skin.

Dear Tomas, the snow came down over the Haverdale pass two days after you left, so I am writing this by the stove with the window shut and the lamp turned low. Mother says you will be cross that I have not kept the sample box dry. I have. The clusters are in the flour tin, wrapped in your old wool sock, and the one with the broken shoulder sits on the sill where the light can reach it.

Mr Pryce from the assay office came up on Thursday asking about the rock you found under the scree at Black Tarn. He wanted to know whether you had marked the seam. I told him you were a fool for not writing it down, and he said that was the most sensible thing he had heard all winter. He turned one of the stones over in his palm and held it to the window, and the light went through it in grey shafts that turned almost violet at the edges, the way the cold does on the ridge. He said the faces were so true they looked drawn by hand.

I have not told him the map is folded inside your coat. I have not told anyone. I keep thinking of how you laughed when you showed me, saying the mountain had folded itself up like a letter nobody meant to read. If you come back by the lower road, come to the back door. Do not come by the front, where Pryce can see you from the office window.
