Realistic dog portrait with pink bandana
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A tattooed portrait of a tan, short-coated dog with a black nose, blue-grey eyes and its tongue hanging out over a bright pink bandana. The fur is rendered with soft blended shading and fine highlights, and the paws are shown at the bottom of the frame. Colour ink dominates, with pinks, tans and blues against the surrounding skin.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, and mind the kettle, it spits. You want the story of Tuppence and the Marigold, then you'll have it my way or not at all. Tan dog, short coat like a brick wall in the rain, and a bandana the colour of a sherbet lolly that Nell Carver tied on her the summer she turned six.

The Marigold was a working boat in those days, carrying coal for the mills at Stanningley, and her skipper was a man called Harry Pask who had no more patience than he had hair. Tuppence rode the front deck with her tongue out, grinning at every swan on the cut as if she'd arranged them herself. Nobody thought much of her except Nell, who came down to the towpath every Saturday with a paper bag of broken biscuits.
Then came the February the cut froze at the edges and the lock gate jammed halfway. Harry was in the water to his chest, trying to get a chain round the balance beam, and the chain came up a yard short. Tuppence went off the bow before anyone could shout her name. She swam the width of the pound with that pink bandana bright as a warning light, dragged the spare mooring line back through the reeds, and wound it twice round the bollard the way Harry had taught her, with a biscuit in his fist for the lesson.
Harry got out. The boat got through. Nell still has the bandana, faded now to the colour of old chewing gum, and she'll tell you the same thing every time: a dog remembers the rattle of a biscuit tin far longer than she remembers the cold.
