Eye with rays on a middle finger

Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a hand with the fingers spread, showing a bold tattoo of an eye on the middle finger. The eye has a thick solid outline, a black iris and pupil, and black lines radiating above and below it. The plain pale background and even lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the last week of August the Kingston Blacks were dropping faster than we could gather them, and the crows had learned our orchard better than we had. Uncle Wilf fetched a tin of gloss black from the shed and a brush worn down to three hairs, and painted an eye on the gatepost. Lid, lashes, a pupil like a wet stone. "Crows won't sit under a thing that's watching them," he said, wiping his hands on his trousers as if the job were done.

It worked for a fortnight. The birds went quiet along the top wall and the windfalls piled sweet and brown under the trees, and I took the credit for a plan that was entirely Wilf's. Then the dry spell came and the grass turned the colour of old string. One evening he held up his hand in the lamplight. He had been down to the village and had a small eye done on his middle finger, with lines spilling out above and below it. "So it can see the weather coming," he said, and I could not tell whether he was joking.

The next morning I climbed the ladder and painted rays onto the gatepost eye, long strokes spreading across the wood as if the sun had been caught staring. By seven the crows had gone from the wall. The windfalls lay in the long shadows of the trees, and the shadows of the rays fell across the grass like pointing fingers. The crows, which had never been told anything, took the hint and flew west toward the church.
