Realistic eye with watercolour splash on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A detailed blue iris with lashes and a pink and red eyelid sits at the centre of the design. Soft watercolour-style splashes in red, pink, blue and teal surround the eye, and red drips run down from its lower edge. The photograph is taken close up on the outer thigh, with a white garment at the top of the frame.

Mind the paint pot, boy, and sit where the light comes off the water, because I'll not tell this twice. Old Hannah Pascoe painted the eyes on every boat in Porthlew for forty years, and she never once painted one the same colour twice. The Gull had blue, the Kittiwake had grey, and the Mary Ellen had a green that made the vicar cross himself.

The winter the herring failed, the harbour master ordered every eye scraped off the bows. He said they frightened the buyers from Penzance. Hannah said nothing. She took her brushes down to the slipway at low tide and painted one more eye on the stone wall, the biggest she had ever done, with lashes like a row of drowned reeds. Then she dipped her thumb in the red of the lobster buoys and let it run down from the lower lid, a single line, as if the eye had been weeping since the Tuesday.

The boats came back in March. Nobody could say how the nets came up full after a winter of empty water, only that the Mary Ellen brought in more than her crew could lift, and every man aboard swore the eye on the wall had watched them home. Hannah's hands shook after that. She told the women at the net loft that a painted eye costs the painter a little of her own sight each time she makes one, and that she had given hers to the wall.

Her son found her on the slipway the next morning, brush still wet in her fist. The paint had dried overnight, and the eye looked back at him, bluer than any sea he had ever fished.
