Realistic lion portrait on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed lion's head is tattooed across the back of a hand, with the eyes, nose and mane rendered in soft shading. The linework is minimal and the tonal gradations create depth and fur texture, with darker areas around the mane. The image is in black and grey, shown against a grey paved background, and the lion's mane fades into the wrist and forearm.

The stock was boiling over when the lion came up through the galley hatch, shaking salt from its mane like a wet dog. Mrs Hester Vane did not drop her ladle. She had cooked for the Corrie Mae for thirty years and had learned that the only things aboard worth fearing were the ones that stopped eating. The lion sat on the flagstones, grey as a February morning, and looked at the pot the way a man looks at a letter he already knows the contents of.

Nobody had brought it aboard. It had simply been in the bread locker the morning they left Hull, curled round the flour sack, and it had been there since, growing a little more solid each time the cook sang over the stove. The ship's boy, Jem, wanted to name it. Hester said lions did not answer to names, only to the smell of something recently dead. So they fed it the gristle from the mutton and the crusts from the forecastle, and at night it walked the length of the lower deck while the rats went quiet ahead of it.
When the gale came down on the third night, the lion climbed the ladder and went out onto the wet deck without a sound. Hester followed with a lamp. It stood at the bow with its head into the wind, and the sea that had been climbing the hull all night lay down flat and grumbling, like a dog told to stay. By dawn the lion was gone. On the galley rail there was a smear of lamp-black where it had leaned, and the stock, when Hester tasted it, had turned as dark and rich as the water far out past the shoals.
