Floral mandala tattoo on a wrist and forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

An outstretched hand and forearm show a large dark floral mandala tattoo across the wrist and lower arm, with further ornamental linework on the back of the hand and fingers. The design uses bold black outlines with grey shading, and the ink is black and grey. Turquoise and black-and-white nail polish and gold jewellery provide the only colour against a grey pavement in a close, shallow-focus shot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are the one who planted the night-scented stock beneath the south wall, the year the old gardener's knees gave out and nobody else would kneel in the wet clay. Everyone in Hollin Terrace knew the wall was too damp for anything but moss, and everyone was wrong about that, which is how you like them. By August the bed had gone thick with bloom, petals opening in rings from a single dark heart, the way a compass rose spreads when you look too long at it.

The trouble came in the form of Mrs Oddie from number nine, who wanted the mandala bed dug up for a gravel path and a row of clipped box. She brought her husband's secateurs and a pair of brown gloves that had never once been used on soil. You told her the roots had gone down past the drains and that pulling them would bring the damp into her cellar, which was a lie, but she believed it, and she left with a jar of seed and a promise.

In October you went out with a bucket of cold tea and a trowel, and you found the path already dug, though not by her. Someone had laid the stones in a spiral that followed the petals inward, every one of them set so tightly the grass could not get between. Sitting at the centre was a small brass ring, green with age, the kind a girl loses from her finger in the summer and does not tell her mother about. You put it on your smallest finger. It fitted, and the bed, for the first time that year, went quiet.
