Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a realistic tattoo showing an open mouth with upper teeth visible, shaded in soft gradients of black and grey. The lips have smooth tonal shading and fine stroke lines along the upper and lower edges, with a surrounding area of slightly reddened skin. The composition fills the frame, centred on the mouth against a plain skin background.

Nobody aboard the Ellen Marrow liked the figurehead, least of all Tobias Quayle, who had to climb out on the bowsprit each morning to scrape the salt from its lips. It was a woman's mouth carved from elm, opened in the middle of a word, and the carver had darkened the throat with lamp soot so it looked like a well. Captain Haskett said it was for the sea to see, so the sea would know there was something alive at the front of the ship.

Off the Skagen reef in February the water went flat and grey, and the wind dropped to nothing for six days. The casks were low. Haskett ordered the rations halved, then halved again, and the men began to look at one another the way gulls look at a dropped chip. On the seventh morning Quayle heard a sound from the bow like a cork drawn from a bottle, and when he climbed out the mouth was wet.
He put his ear to the carved lips and heard water running somewhere far below, a steady trickle, as if a spring were slipping through the dark of the throat. He told no one but the cook, Mercy Dunn, who came out with a tin cup at dusk and held it under the chin. By morning it was half full. The men drank it in turns and nobody asked where it came from, though Haskett did, once, and the mouth closed its wooden teeth on his sleeve and would not let go until he swore to share the next biscuit.
They raised the Sound a week later with the cup still on the rail. Quayle scraped the lips clean again and found the throat black and dry, the water gone. Only the teeth stayed bright with salt.
