Realistic paw print with dog face on calf
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A paw print with five toe pads and a dog's face in the central pad, shown in soft greyscale shading. The fur, eyes and nose are rendered with fine tonal gradation, and the outline of the paw is defined by solid black edges. The tattoo fills most of the frame against skin and a white paper towel background.

Mind the frost bed, you lot, and don't go pressing your boots in it the way young Tom did. Ask him. Every morning that March, the first thing Mrs Hadley saw from her kitchen window was a line of prints across the wet soil, four toes and a pad, neat as stitches, running from the shed to the gate. In the middle of each big pad, pressed deep as a thumb, was a face. Not a smudge. A dog's face, nose and eyes and all, as if the animal had put its whole head down in the mud to say something.

Mr Pellow had buried his old collie Jess under the cherry tree the autumn before, and everyone in the lane knew he still talked to that tree on Sundays. So when the prints started, folk said it was Jess come back to sniff the bulbs. Mrs Hadley said nothing. She got up at five with a flask of tea and a torch, and she watched.
It was not Jess. It was the Harker boy's brindle lurcher, which had been slipping through the gap in the fence every night because it liked the warm heap of compost by the shed. It took nothing. It walked the same round the old dog used to walk, shed to gate, gate to cherry tree, and it always stopped where Jess used to lie, nose down, as if listening for her breathing.
Mr Pellow, who had never once learned the names of the neighbours' dogs, stood at his back window and wept into his cardigan. The prints were rained off by breakfast, but he left the gate open all that spring, and on frosty mornings you could still see where something had paused beneath the cherry tree and looked back at the house.
