Realistic dog face in paw print
Realism · Mixed · Photo
A large paw print forms the frame, with a dog's face set within the toe pads and a second paw reaching down over the lower pad. The fur is rendered with fine, layered strokes and soft shading, and the dog's eyes and black nose are detailed. The palette is mostly warm browns and greys with dark black shadows, and the design fills most of the frame against plain skin.

Now, you'll all have heard how the Harrow boys courted at the Michaelmas fair, but you've not heard about Bramble, who carried the rings. Bramble was a collie with one ear that stood up and one that didn't bother, and he had the habit of walking the lane between the chapel and the Crown ahead of every funeral and every wedding in the valley, as if someone had appointed him. Nobody ever trained him to it. He simply knew which days mattered.

On the morning of the Ashworth wedding, the rings were in a tobacco tin tied with red wool, and the tin was in Tom Ashworth's coat, and Tom was stuck behind a gate with his father's hat blown off into the beck. Bramble trotted up the lane, took the wool in his teeth, and set the tin down on the bottom step of the chapel. Then he sat with his nose to the wind until the bride came round the corner laughing. Some say he was grinning. I say a dog who has done his work is entitled to look pleased with himself.
Years on, when the old vicar was clearing the vestry, he found a pawprint pressed into the damp plaster beside the door, four toes and the soft pad of a dog who had stood there a long while, waiting. Nobody scrubbed it off. The brides still touch it on their way in, for luck, and the grooms, who know better, touch it too.
So raise your glasses to the couple, mind the step, and keep an eye on your pockets, because Bramble is watching us all.
