The windfalls under the Discovery trees have gone soft in the grass, and you, Mabel, are the only one in Hollins orchard who knows which are still sweet. Your bow is orange, tied on by Nan before she went up to the bungalow, and it already has a burr caught in it. The pickers call you a nuisance. You regard the wasps as the real nuisance, and you bark at them until they leave.

Each afternoon you work the rows low, nose down, choosing the bruised drops nobody will sell and carrying them one at a time to the stone wall at the bottom field. It takes all day. It is absurd for a dog who weighs less than a bag of flour. The cider-barn boy watches from his ladder and says you're stockpiling for winter, and you let him believe it, because it keeps him from asking where the apples go.

On the last Saturday of August the wall finally comes down. The farmer's wife has been cross about the missing fruit and has blamed squirrels, then the neighbours, then the weather. The boy lifts the top course of stones and out spills a mound of brown apples, soft and sweet as jam, and beneath them a biscuit tin of ribbons, every bow Nan ever tied on you, folded flat and faded from red to pink.

The boy holds the tin up and looks at you. You sneeze, and the orange bow slides down over one eye, and for once nobody argues with what you have decided to keep.
