The dog came out of the bricks behind the Bethnal Green gasworks on the night the lamplighter's boy stopped whistling. Nobody saw the crack open. It had a short muzzle and a tongue as long as a bell rope, and it did not bark. It sat on the cobbles and looked at the sleeping street with eyes like wet coal, as though it had been paid to keep watch and was only now being told the hours. The constable came, then the cabman, then a man in a grey coat who said he had lost a dog years back and would know it anywhere. The dog looked at him and licked its lips slowly, and the man found he had business elsewhere.

Nell gave it the last of her chestnuts. It took them gently, one at a time, and when the bells of St Matthew's struck two it rose and walked back to the crack. Where its shoulders pressed the brick, the mortar gave and gave, and for a moment the wall held a dog-shaped hole full of lamplight. Then the bricks closed over it like a page turning.

Each winter after that, Nell found a scorched chestnut shell on her doorstep, split neat as a torn seam, and she left the back door on the latch.
