Realistic portrait of a man holding a blade

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic portrait of a man with dishevelled hair, dark-rimmed eyes and a faint, sideways expression, with a hand gripping a long blade across the lower half of the design. The shading is smooth and tonal, with soft gradients across the skin and strong highlights in the hair. The tattoo is in black and grey only and fills a tall, narrow frame against a dark background.

You hear the shutters of Gallowgate Row come down at ten, and by eleven the gaslight on Pell Street has gone the colour of weak tea. You know this because you have been standing in the doorway of Crane's Shaving Rooms since nine, pretending to read a handbill about cholera, waiting for the bell over the door to stop ringing for the last customer.

Crane is at the chair with his back to you, sleeves rolled, the long razor opening and closing in the lamplight like a hinge. His hair stands up where he has dragged his fingers through it all evening, and a silver ring on his left hand catches the light each time he turns the blade. He does not look round. He says the cut on your chin is from last Tuesday's brawl and you should have come sooner, and you realise he has been watching your reflection in the strop mirror the whole time.

You sit. The leather is warm from someone else's neck. He lathers you without speaking and works the blade down your jaw with a patience that feels like a sentence being passed. Outside a cab rattles past and the window rattles with it. You count his breaths. Somewhere under the floorboards a clock that has been stopped since the spring begins, very quietly, to tick.

When he lifts the blade away there is no cut at all, only a clean line of skin and a folded paper on the basin with a name written in his cramped hand: yours. Beneath it, smaller: paid in full. You pick it up. Your own voice sounds strange when you ask him what it means, and he simply wipes the razor on a towel, smiles without warmth, and says, Come back when the bell rings again.
