Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A person sits with crossed legs and one hand resting on the knee, showing a rose tattoo on the forearm. The rose is shaded in soft black and grey with detailed petals, and a thin stem with leaves extends up the arm. The warm, sepia-toned photograph is a close crop, with skin and a striped cushion filling most of the frame.

Her mother had planted it there the spring the miller drowned, a dark climbing rose from the monks' garden at Sallow, and every winter since it had shut its petals and gone grey as ash. Nobody in the village picked it. Travellers said it was the only thing in Harrow that never froze. The girl set the lamp down and reached for the bloom, and a thin green stem ran down the stone toward her hand, its leaves unfolding one by one like the fingers of someone waking.

The pedlar Tobiah Crane had slept in the room above that wall three nights running and paid in horn buttons. He came down the stairs now with his boots in his hand. "It only flowers for the one who has carried the weight of the house," he said, "and you have carried it since your mother's funeral." He took a knife from his belt, cut the stem at the root, and wrapped it in wet sacking. "Plant it somewhere the sun never reaches. It will keep you company all winter."
