Realistic roses and red gem heart on forearms

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side, each with a dense cluster of realistic grey-shaded roses and dark leaves. A large faceted red heart gem sits at the centre of each design, with a glossy highlight that gives it depth. The soft shading on the petals contrasts with the crisp edges of the gem, and the composition is framed by ripped denim.

Dear Tom,

The frost took the last of the red roses off the south wall on Tuesday, so I went out with the lantern before breakfast and cut what was left, black leaves and all, before they went to mush. There are eleven heads in the scullery jug now. They look like they are sulking, but the kitchen is warm and Mum would have said that was a good enough place for anything to sulk.

The stone turned up in the furrow by the bottom gate after Jonah ploughed the long field. The dog found it first and wouldn't give it up, and when I prised it from his jaws it was the size of a hen's egg, cut into a heart with a hundred little faces, red as a robin's chest. I have put it on the windowsill beside the jug. At four o'clock the sun comes through the glass and throws a small red heart onto the wall above the sink, and I stand there with my hands in the washing-up water and watch it move.

Mr Carrow from the agricultural bank came on Thursday with his folder and his clean boots. He said the figures were what they were. I offered him tea and he took it, and he didn't ask about the stone, and I didn't tell him. Some things a farm keeps back for itself.

If you can get leave for the lambing, come at the end of the month. Bring nothing but the good secateurs. The roses will hold if we keep them cold enough, and I think we can manage that between us.

Love, Nell
