Realistic shark tattoo across a full back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large shark with its jaws open fills most of the back, shown from behind with teeth and gums rendered in detail. The shading is smooth and highly realistic, with soft grey tones over dark, churning water and cloud-like texture. Black ornamental swirls sit over the shoulders, and dark sleeve work and a small patch of colour appear on the arms.

The harbour of Velmoor has been shut for three days because the bell buoy at the mouth of the bay has stopped ringing, and the harbour master's daughter, Ilse Corran, sends you out at grey dawn to find out why. You row the skiff past the breakwater, where the swell turns the colour of wet slate and the clouds sit so low they seem to be a second sea hanging above the first.

Beneath the hull something enormous turns. First the dorsal fin cuts the surface, then the pale belly rolls up through the dark, and then the mouth opens slowly, a cave lined with teeth as long as your forearm. The bell buoy hangs from one of them, caught like a ring on a careless finger. Foam curls up around the jaw in the same long scrolls that decorate the gates of the old kingdom of Halvary, and you understand at last that those carvings were never ornament. They were a warning, and nobody in Velmoor had bothered to read them.

You do not wrench the bell free. The old women on the quay say the shark of Crann Bay keeps the tides in order, and the bell is only the clapper it uses for the boats it chooses to spare. So you sit still with the oars shipped and count the tides aloud the way your grandfather taught you, one number to each breath, until the great head sinks and the jaws close around nothing at all.

The bell rings once, clean and loud, and every gull in the harbour lifts at the same moment. When you tie up at the quay, Ilse is waiting with a face like a shut door. "Well?" You hold out the bell's cracked clapper, a single grey tooth, and tell her the sea has been keeping its promises.
