Realistic tiger head with blue eyes on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A collage showing a finished realistic tiger head tattoo with striking blue eyes on the upper arm and shoulder, with a dark city skyline and a metal-style club crest below it. Shading gives the fur strong texture and depth, with soft blue and orange tones. Smaller images show the same design as a red linework stencil on the shoulder and a tattoo being applied by a gloved artist.

The tiger came down out of the hills the winter the mill closed, and nobody in Calder Ferry could say whose it had been. It walked the length of Mill Street at dawn, past the shuttered looms and the chapel with its cracked bell, and it stopped where the road met the river, the way a man stops to read a sign he already knows.

Its eyes were blue, the colour of the ice that skinned the millpond. Old Sadie Brine, who kept the ferry, swore they were lit from behind, and that when the tiger looked at a person they saw their own street as it would be in ten years. Most people took that for gin talk. Still, when the tannery men got up a fund to buy a crest for the new football ground, the first thing they asked for was a badge with the tiger's head set over the town's roofs.
The badge was cast in brass and hung on the gate. Every Saturday the tiger came and lay on the step beneath it, and every Saturday the town lost, and lost again, and the tiger went home unbothered. The ferryman's grandson asked why it kept coming to a place where it never won. Sadie said the tiger had never come to win. It came to see whether anyone still turned up.
On the last Saturday of the season the ground was empty but for one boy with a torn scarf and the tiger on the step. He stood with it until the lights came on across the river, and when he finally turned to go, the brass crest was warm under his hand.
