Realistic wing tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large feathered wing is tattooed along the forearm, with individual feathers shaded from near-black at the tips to soft grey near the base. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, giving the wing a three-dimensional look. A faint teal wash sits behind the feathers, and the person's torso and a blue top are visible in the background of this phone screenshot of a social media post.

The dough had sat too long in the proving cupboard, and Harold said so twice before the shutters went up. I told him it had been waiting for me, which is the sort of thing you can say at four in the morning on Carrow Lane, when nothing else in the street has decided to be awake. Flour hung in the lamplight like something left over from a snowfall nobody had bothered to finish.

He taught me the wing loaf the winter my hands stopped shaking on the peel. Score from the tip inward, he said, short strokes, each one leaning back toward the shoulder of the bread. Let the edges catch the heat longer. The top goes nearly black where the oven leans on it, and the base stays pale as crumb, so the whole thing lifts off the rack as if it means to go somewhere.

Harold never sold them. He baked one each morning and set it on the sill facing the road, and by seven somebody always took it. The postman, once. A woman in a green coat who never came in for anything else. A boy from the bus depot who said his nan had kept hens and would have liked the smell of this. I never asked what they were for. You don't ask a loaf what it is carrying.

This morning the sky over the chimney pots went from ink to the colour of weak tea, and I slid the last tray in, scored my wing across the top and watched the blade mark it dark. Harold came to stand beside me, wiping his hands on his apron. He looked at the sill for a long while. Then he said, go on, put it out, and I did.
