Split-face wolf head on upper back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large wolf head fills the centre of the frame, facing forward with its muzzle, ears and fur rendered in detail. The left half of the face is lit in pale grey and the right half is in deep black, creating a split effect. The small eyes are the only colour, with a blue iris on the left and a red iris on the right, set against a plain skin background.

The night the fair came to Wrayford, the wolf was already waiting at the gate, sitting on its haunches like a man who had paid his penny and meant to see the show.

Josiah Penn had bought it from a drover at Spalding for six sovereigns and a bad horse. The drover swore it had been whelped in a frost-bitten hollow in the Lincolnshire hills, its mother lying across a banked fire to keep her pups warm, so that one side of the young wolf's face came out the colour of ash and the other the colour of coal. Its left eye was blue as a gas flame and its right was red as a poker left in the grate. Children paid a farthing to see it. It never growled. It only looked at them, first with one eye and then the other, until they ran laughing back to their mothers.
On the third night the takings went missing from the strongbox in Penn's caravan. The constable said it was a gypsy boy or a drunk from the Crown. Penn said nothing, but when the lamps were low he unlatched the wolf's cage and followed it out past the dodgems and over the stubble, where it moved without hurry and stopped now and then to lift its head into the wind. It led him to a barn at the edge of the fen, where a lantern was still burning and a man was counting coins on an upturned crate.
Penn did not shout. He stood in the doorway while the wolf sat on the threshold and turned its head, first one way and then the other, so that the thief could see both its faces in the light. The man ran. The wolf let him go and trotted back to the fair, and when Penn reached the gate it was waiting for him again, grey on one side, black on the other, watching him with both eyes.
