Red and cream floral tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A raised arm shows a colour tattoo of two large flowers, one red and one pale cream or yellow, with green leaves and a closed pink bud running down the forearm. The linework is soft and the shading is gentle, giving the flowers a painted, botanical look. The pink blossom in the blurred background dominates the composition and echoes the tattoo's palette.

Since Lent she had done it herself, badly, with the stone sloping in its trough and the water going grey.

The peony was the trouble. Their father had kept two plants along the south wall of the Hythe orchard, one bloom the colour of a postbox, the other a cream gone yellow at the heart, and the two families had not spoken for thirty years over which had been dug up first. Ada had never taken sides. That September morning she cut a bud from the red plant and bound it onto the cream root's stock, tying the raffia so tight the leaves shook.

Her neighbour Mrs Ferris came over the wall with a basket of windfalls and asked what on earth she was doing grafting peonies in autumn. Ada said the old stock needed a new mouth. Mrs Ferris laughed, then looked at the bud, shut tight and pink as a knuckle, and went quiet for a while.

Ada waited through October. In November, when the frost had taken the last of the apple leaves, she unwound the raffia and found the join had held, a thin green seam where two gardens met. The bud was still closed. She wiped the knife on her apron and laid it back in the drawer, ready for spring.
