Grey wing tattoos on the backs of two hands

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are pressed palm to palm in front of a bush of orange flowers, with the backs of the hands turned towards the camera. Each hand carries a small single wing tattoo in grey shading, with soft gradients and fine feather detail. The image is in natural colour, with the warm orange flowers and green foliage contrasting with the monochrome ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The big top came down in Hull on Tuesday, and the man from the council stood under the rigging with his clipboard as if he expected the canvas to argue. I watched it from the caravan window, the way you used to watch the net from the platform, counting each pull. Dad always said a circus is only ever one bad winter from being a car park.

I found your letter in the lining of the costume trunk, folded small inside the sequinned collar you never wore. You wrote that the ferry work in Calais suits you, and that the swifts you drew on the back of your hand the night before you left still look alive in the right light. I drew mine that night with a biro because the ink shop had shut. You said the grey would fade to nothing in a year. It hasn't.

Here is what I have not told the others. Last Thursday, in the empty ring, I climbed to the low board and nobody was on the far bar to catch me. I jumped anyway. I put my palms out in the old shape, and the air took me the way it always did, and my hands met nothing but cold air and then, somehow, each other. I think that is the closest I will come to a catch now.

Come home if you want. The tent is gone but the net still hangs in the shed, and I have oiled the rings. Bring the swifts. We will fly for a crowd of two.
