Red and orange flowers on a shoulder
Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A cluster of stylised flowers, including large orange and red blooms with a few smaller red berries and grey-green leaves, runs diagonally across the skin. Bold black outlines define the petals and foliage, with flat fills and some soft shading inside the shapes. The bright warm palette stands out against the pale skin, and a dark strap sits at the lower left of the frame.

The Wardian case rode in the stern cabin, out of the spray, and every morning before the bell I lifted the glass and counted leaves. Eleven days out from Valparaíso, three seedlings had pushed through the soil I had carried in a tin lined with wet flannel. They were no taller than my thumb, grey-green at the edges, and the captain called them weeds.

Mr Harcourt wanted the case over the side on the fourth night, when the wind got up and the crew were short of hands at the pumps. He said a man who brought flowers to sea had forgotten what the sea was for. I said nothing. I went below and sat with the case in my lap while the ship groaned round us like a barn door, and I talked to the seedlings the way my father talked to his bees.
On the nineteenth morning the nearest bud split along one seam and unfolded like a wet cloth held to a fire, orange at the lip and a deeper red bleeding inward. Berries had come too, small and hard as shot, clustered on a stalk no thicker than string. I carried the case up the companionway in both hands, past Harcourt at the wheel, and set it on the rail where the light came off the Channel.
He looked at it a long while. Then he took off his cap, which I had never seen him do for anything but the chaplain, and said, very quietly, that his mother had kept poppies in a blue jug in Deal. We kept the case until Gravesend. The jug, I am told, still sits on his windowsill.
