Puppy climbing an orange ribbon

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon brown puppy with a yellow-tipped nose clings to the top of a large orange ribbon loop, with its front paws hooked over the edge. The ribbon curls down into a looped tail with black outlines and soft orange shading. The design is filled with flat brown, orange and yellow ink on pinkish skin, and it sits centred on the limb.

The last lamps are going out along the Big Top row when you find Pip wedged behind the hook-a-duck tank, chewing the corner of a raffle ticket. Nobody on the Blackwater Travelling Fair wanted him after the Harvest Show, when he was pinned a rosette for Best Puppy Under Six Months and then, the very next morning, handed back to the breeder, who said he had eaten a hat.

Dolores Finch, who runs the hoopla stall, says he came off a van outside Stockport for a pound and a sausage roll, and that he has been returned twice since, once by the ferris wheel man and once in the back of a bread van. She tells you this with the cheerful finality of someone who has been waiting for you to ask. You say nothing. You unclip the lead from the hoopla post and he tugs you towards the orange banner strung across the gate, the one that reads FAIR SAFE, FAIR FUN, faded pale where the sun has got at it all summer.

He scrambles up the canvas edge, brown fur bristling, front paws hooked over the top of the loop like a swimmer who has decided the pool belongs to him. The ribbon curls down behind him in a long tail, and he looks at you as though the whole arrangement was his idea. Dolores laughs until she has to sit on a crate of lemonade. At dawn the wagons roll out with the banner folded on the back of the cab, and somewhere on the motorway a small brown head keeps poking out of the window.
