Red blossoms and forget-me-nots on a calf
Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo
A bouquet of red blossoms, small blue forget-me-not flowers with pale yellow centres, buds and thin grass stems is tattooed on the outer lower leg above the ankle. The design uses bold dark outlines with smooth solid fills and soft shading on the petals and leaves. The bouquet is centred on the leg against a plain grey floor, with a bare foot raised in the foreground.

The bouquet had been Mrs Okonedo's idea, though she swore it was the florist's. By the third Saturday in March the cuttings from the Hollis orchard were wilting in their jam jars on the windowsill of the back room, and Joan Pardoe had stopped pretending she didn't care whether the blossom held.

She worked at the counter of the post office in Aldbury Wells, which meant she knew everybody's handwriting and most of their secrets. Letters came in from London with the same blue ink, every fortnight, addressed to a Mr E. Carrow at the farm past the mill. Nobody had ever collected them. Joan had begun to suspect he was waiting for a reason to, and that the reason was her.
On the Saturday she walked out with the bundle tied in string, the grass stems pinned in with a hairclip, forget-me-nots from the verge gone blue and limp at the edges. The mud sucked at her shoes. At the gate a dog barked, then a man in a waxed coat turned round and stared at the flowers as if they were a summons.
He took the letters without looking at the envelopes. Then he took the bouquet, sniffed it, and said the orchard had been his mother's, and that she had always said the quince came first and the forget-me-nots came last because you could only remember a thing once you'd lost it. Joan said that sounded like something a woman said when she wanted to be sad in a tidy way. He laughed, properly, and she walked home the long way with the empty string in her pocket.
