Red diamond motif with ink splatter on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of two overlapping red diamonds sits on the outer upper thigh, with black ink splashes and a scatter of small red dots trailing down and to the left. The diamonds have solid shaded red fills with darker edges, and the splatter adds a loose, painterly contrast to the hard geometric shapes. The photo is taken from the side, cropped below the hips and above the knee, with a dark denim short and a patterned floor in the background.

Inside lay a harlequin's costume, its diamonds faded to the colour of rust and claret, one sleeve torn at the elbow.

He spent three evenings at the scrubbed table, cutting fresh diamonds from a bolt of red silk bought off a Whitby draper and stitching them over the old ones so the seams never quite met. Nell, who was eleven and wanted to be useful, mixed his ink in a jam jar and giggled every time he swore at a drip. 'Harlequin never comes out clean,' Mr Crane said, not looking up. 'That's the whole joke of him.'

On the last night the back door banged in the wind. The jar went over the flagstones and the ink ran in a fan of small red dots toward the sea steps, while black blots spread where the cloth lay soaking. Nell reached for the rag, but he caught her wrist and let the stain be.

In the morning the dots had dried into a neat path down to the tide line. Mr Crane pinned the finished diamonds to the costume and hung it on the back of the kitchen door, where the lodgers stopped to stare at it over their porridge. Nobody asked him where the path went, and he never said.
