Red flower and sister script on forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A red, watercolour-style flower with soft pink and crimson petals sits on the forearm, with a fine black script word reading sister trailing from its stem. A pale yellow-tan leaf with thin outline sits beside the lettering. The shading is soft and blended in the petals, with delicate, unbroken linework in the script and leaf, set against plain skin and a dark background.

Dear Wren,

The orchard gate still sticks, so I had to lift it the way Dad taught us, and the hinge gave its usual complaint. I found the hollyhock you planted the spring before you left. It came up crimson at the edge of the woodpile, where nobody thought anything would grow, and I stood there with a bucket of windfalls feeling absurdly cross that you weren't here to be smug about it.
Mrs Halloran from the shop asked after you. She wanted to know whether the Bristol job had come through, and I said I had no idea, which is the truth. You never tell anyone anything until it's already happened. I've started leaving the porch light on for you, which is daft, since you have a key and a habit of climbing in through the scullery window anyway.
I took your old sketchbook down from the attic and found the page where you'd drawn the flower, the one with the leaf tipped sideways like it was trying to hear something. Underneath, in your scrawl, you'd written the word we used to shout up the stairs when one of us was being impossible. I'm not going to write it here in case the postman reads it. Come home and I'll say it to your face.
The kettle's on. I've left the back door unlocked, just in case.
Love, Rose
