Lotus flower on a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A lotus flower with pointed pink and violet petals and a yellow seed head sits on the inside of a wrist. The petals have dark outlines and soft blended shading that moves from pink to purple. The flower is centred on the wrist against a plain skin background, with a blurred outdoor scene and a hand and painted toenails visible at the edges.

The lotus came up through the silt of Cutter's Basin in the second week of June, which is late for lotus, and nobody on the towpath could say who had dropped the seed. I found it on my rounds, a rosette of pale green leaves lying flat on the black water like a dinner plate someone had pushed away.

I am the night lock-keeper at Ashby Lock, and my job is to log the boats, check the gates and keep the drunks out of the weir. At one in the morning the city goes orange and then quiet, and the only sound is the pumps and the water talking to itself under the bridge. Every night I shone my torch on that leaf and every night it had grown another, pinker than the last, folding its petals up tight the way a fist closes.
By August there were seven flowers, each one opening only after dark, violet at the root and rose at the tip, with a yellow heart like a bulb left on in an empty flat. The council men wanted them cut. I wrote a letter saying the basin was a dead place with nothing in it, and I did not sign my name, because I did not want anyone to ask what I had been looking at for three months at two in the morning.
The last one opened on the night the gates were finally due to be drained. I stood on the edge with my torch off. It had come out of the mud with nothing to feed it but the rain running off the warehouse roofs, and it did not need anyone to understand it. I switched the light back on and let it sit there, lit from inside, until the sky over the gasworks turned the colour of its petals and the first barge horn sounded.
