Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A cropped photo of a person standing on a white bed, showing the upper back and waist. A black and grey script tattoo sits across the lower back, though only the top part of the lettering is visible. The black leggings have large white XO logos and symbols down one leg, and the bright white bedding sits behind them.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dorrit Fenn had been lettering shop windows in Gullmouth for thirty-one years, and the first rule the old hands taught her was to paint every word backwards on the glass so the street could read it the right way round. Her brother Owen never believed in the rule. He said the trick was in the brushes. This morning she had a paper stencil pinned to the dressmaker's pane on Harbour Row, a looped word and two crossed letters she had cut herself, and the gold leaf lay cold under her thumb.

Owen came in with two teas and asked why she was using stark cream on black instead of gold. She said black hid the dust and cream could be read from the far end of the pier. He leaned on the doorframe and watched her load the brush. The dressmaker, Mrs Hollis, had died in March, and her daughter wanted the sign to stay exactly as it was, only cleaner, as if the glass could be made to remember a shop that had never needed a new name.
When the last stroke was dry, Dorrit stepped back into the street and checked the lettering from the pavement. Every letter was reversed and clean. Owen tapped the glass with his fingernail and said nobody would ever read it properly from out here. She agreed. Inside, the daughter would stand at the counter each morning and read it the right way round, with the light coming through the window behind her, and that was the only reader the sign had ever needed.
