Red flowers and scrollwork on a foot
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A tattoo across the top of a foot shows large red and pink flowers with pale highlights and soft shading. Black scrollwork with teal and blue tones curls over the upper part of the design and towards the ankle. The shading is smooth and the colour is saturated, set against a pale background of paper towel.

The gate arrived on a Wednesday cart, still warm from the foundry in Leeds, and Mr Ansell had it bolted across the glasshouse door before anyone thought to measure the frame. Ruth stood in the wet gravel with her apron knotted twice round her middle and watched the iron scrolls curl over the lintel as if they had somewhere else to be.

The bulbs inside were her father's doing. He had carried them home from Lisbon in a biscuit tin packed with sawdust, and for thirty years they had come up every February, the sheaths splitting to show petals pink at the rim and red at the throat, the colour of a thumb held under a cold tap. Ansell called them vulgar. He wanted the hotel in Harrogate to have a clean black gate and bare benches, and he wanted the glass sold by the crate.
Ruth did not argue. On the last night before the fitters came back she wrapped every bulb in wet sacking, packed them in the tin, and carried it up the lane to the allotment in the rain, stopping twice to rest the weight against the wall. She planted them under the hawthorn where the ground was soft and nobody would think to dig.
In March the gate hung black and blank across an empty house. Ruth walked up the lane with a trowel and found the first red spear already pushing through the crumbled soil, and beside it, tangled in the hawthorn roots, a single bloom with its petals open wide, as if it had been waiting for someone to notice where it had gone.
