Red fox head logo on the lower back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of a stylised fox head sits on bare skin. The solid red fill is outlined in black with soft, slightly irregular edges, and the shading is flat rather than gradient. The tattoo is centred on the frame, with an orange-pink waistband crossing the bottom of the image.

You find the fox in the Bramley rows before the pickers arrive, nosing through windfalls with a coat so bright against the late-August grass that you think at first someone has dropped a scarf. Wasps are drunk on the fallen plums. Your father always said foxes are patient thieves, and this one has been taking fruit from the crates you left stacked by the gate for three nights running.

You don't chase it. You sit on an upturned crate with a flask of tea and wait, the way your grandmother taught you to wait for a hen to lay. The fox lifts its sharp, black-edged ears and looks at you with a face that doesn't blink. For a long moment neither of you moves. Then it trots off along the hedge toward the old cider barn, and you follow at a distance, past the rusted sprayer and the swing gate that hasn't latched since the spring.

Inside the barn there is a split sack of unsold windfalls and a gap under the floorboards where the dust is pawed smooth. Three pale kits tumble over one another in the gloom. You realise the crates were never the real problem. The orchard has more than enough to share, and you have simply been counting it wrong. You leave the gate open and let the cold tea sit in the flask.

By October you have stopped trying to balance the ledger against the hedgerow losses. The shortfall still sits there in your neat columns, but beside it you have started drawing a small red fox, ears up, looking straight back at you.
