Red goldfish tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small red goldfish with long, trailing fins sits diagonally on the forearm, angled head down. The fish is shaded with soft gradients from bright red to deeper orange and dark tones around the eye. The background is a blurred indoor scene with grey knitwear on the sleeve and warm wooden surfaces behind.

The moat had been dry for two summers when the red fish turned up in the water butt by the gatehouse, and Mrs Pargeter swore it had come down the drain from the Hallows' conservatory. I didn't believe her. Nothing from a conservatory has fins like that, trailing out behind it like a bridal veil caught on a thorn.

We were the only two left at Carrick Hollow, the castle with its roof gone and its keep wearing ivy like a shawl. I came up each morning to sweep the leaves off the guardroom steps, and each morning the fish had moved, always on the same slant, nose tipped down as if reading something at the bottom of the stone. I started leaving crusts on the sill.
In October the rain came in sideways and filled the moat to the lip. Mrs Pargeter's grandson dragged a net through the reeds and brought up nothing but eels and a rusted helmet. I stood on the bank with my hands in my coat pockets, certain the fish was gone, and then it rose under the drawbridge, the colour of a lit coal, fins opening slowly like a fan folded the wrong way.
I still don't know where it came from. I know it kept its head down, always, and that the moat stayed full after the rain stopped, which the surveyor said was impossible. I wrote that in the visitors' book under the date and left the pen on its chain so the next person could read it.
