Red hamsa mandala on lower back
Geometric · Back · Colour · Photo
A large hamsa hand sits at the centre of an ornamental mandala design that spreads across the lower back. The design is drawn in fine, even red lines with some stippled detail, and arched and feathered motifs frame the hand. The image is a close, straight-on shot of the back with orange fabric visible at the bottom edge, and the single red ink colour dominates the composition.

Dear Tomas, the madder vats have turned again and the whole lane smells of rust and onions. Mr Okonedo says I have the steady hand now, so he gave me the widow's shawl with the hand at its centre. You will laugh, because you always said my lines wobbled like a drunk man walking home. Not this time. I drew the hand first in charcoal, five fingers spread, then built the arches outward like a fan opening on both sides.

The hard part is symmetry. Every arch must answer the one across from it, and the feathered points along the hem must stop exactly where the cloth folds. I measured with a knotted string and got it wrong twice. The third time I stopped counting and let my hand run on its own. When I stepped back, the whole pattern seemed to breathe, the way the harbour does at dusk.
Mrs Abara came for it this morning. She did not say much. She ran her thumb along one arch, then the matching arch opposite, nodding at each as if she were counting. Then she turned the cloth so the hand lay face down and asked me to fold the ends. I told her the red would deepen with washing. She said that was good, that some colours should be carried until they set.
I have kept an offcut for you, pressed flat in this envelope. Hold it to the lamp and you can still see the fine lines where the dye has bled. Write soon and tell me the ship has not swallowed you whole. Your loving sister, Esi.
