Black linework being tattooed on a hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A tattooist's hand works a needle into the skin of another person's hand, leaving a fine black line partly visible. A second hand holds the skin taut from above, and both hands have painted nails. The image is warm-toned and tightly framed, with the tattoo design only partly shown and no full composition visible.

Dear Ysolde,

The Ferrow lamps were already lit when Mother sent me up to the ferry house with the box of blackwort ink, so I did not see the river woman arrive, only the hand she laid on the table, palm up, as though it were a page she had already decided to spoil. Mother had told me the lines were to be the Tessaly, from the falls to the salt marsh, and that I was to draw them exactly as the old chart showed, no quicker than the water runs.

I pinched the skin taut with two fingers and worked the needle along the first bend. Each prick made a small sound like a seed dropping into a cup. The ink went in black and stayed black, which Mother says is the only honest colour. Pearl, the rush-girl from the boats, held the lamp and kept counting the bends under her breath, and every time I lifted the needle she murmured the name of the next village the river would pass.

We reached the marsh just before the bell. I wiped the last bead of ink with my thumb and the line ran cleanly off the edge of the palm and over the wrist, where the rain could not reach it. The river woman looked at it for a long time, then folded her fingers over it and said she would know the way home now, even in the dark, even blind.

I have painted my own nails black tonight so I can see the ink on them if I must. Mother says I should stop fussing, but I think I will keep the river until I can find the sea.
