You lean on the counter with your shoes in your hand and watch the band pack away their saxophones one case at a time, the bass player last, swearing softly at a broken clasp.

Dolores has a habit of keeping things nobody claims. Gloves, a single earring, a man's wristwatch that still ticks. Tonight she holds up a grey coat with a torn lining and asks whether you think its owner will come back for it. You tell her no. She takes a stub of cardboard from the drawer, dips her fountain pen in the bottle she keeps behind the hat pegs, and draws three solid stars on it, smallest at the top, the largest sitting in the middle like someone who knows the way.

"That's a route," she says. "Top one's where you were. Middle one's where you are. Bottom one's wherever the band's playing next." You ask what she charges for a ticket like that. She laughs and says the ink's free, the rest is the price of the coat.

Outside, the prom lamps stretch long and wobbling across the wet sand, and the tide is coming in quieter than it went out. You pin the stub inside your coat, the one you walked in with, and step out into the cold.
