Red jelly mould with rainbow on a leg

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A red jelly mould with a scalloped rim and heart-shaped speckles fills the frame, with a small rainbow and cloud visible inside one section. The bold black outlines and flat, solid red fill give it a classic cartoon-like look, with faint lighter highlights on the jelly. The tattoo is shown close up on a leg against plain skin, with the design filling most of the composition.

The mould had been upside down on the draining board since Tuesday, and I was not letting the regatta committee see it that way. Gran's jelly mould, scalloped round the rim, with the little red freckles she painted on the glaze herself, had come over on the Tuesday boat wrapped in a tea towel and a page of the Cairnbay Courier. Dougie the ferryman swore he had lifted it gently. The crack down one fluted finger said otherwise.

Nobody on Scarrow makes a proper jelly for the summer show any more. The shop sells packets in orange and green, and the bairns eat them out of plastic cups on the grass. But Gran always said a jelly should stand up on its own, and she set hers with a sliver of blue in the middle for the sky, so that when you cut into it the whole island looked back at you.

I spent Wednesday night with a bowl of hot water and a tube of the glue Dougie uses on his nets. At half four a squall came in off the machair and I stood in the pantry doorway listening to rain drum on the tin roof, thinking about the lemon layer I'd stacked in the mould that morning. Then the sun broke through the window and lit the whole thing up red, every speckle catching the light like a small heart.

When it finally slid out clean at nine, it wobbled on the plate like something alive, and the lamp from the hall window ran straight through it, laying a little rainbow across the trestle cloth. Dougie took one look, asked if it was for the committee, and I told him it was for whoever had the sense to eat it first.
