Nut-coated ice lolly with flames on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A nut-coated ice lolly with a bitten top and a wooden stick fills the centre of the design, shown on a hairy lower leg. The coating is rendered with dense, textured stippling in tan, brown and cream, with red flecks and a glossy red centre. Orange and yellow flame shapes and a soft glow surround the lolly against a black background.

Right, gather in, and mind the kerb, because Mrs Abernethy's dog has already had one of my nut-coated lollies off the wall and I'll not be the one who explains that to the vet. Now. You want the story of the Scarlet Sunday? I'll tell it the way my gran told it to me, stood on an upturned crate outside the Odeon in Hull with the whole street gone orange.

It was August, hot enough that the tar on Carr Lane bubbled like a pan. Old Dessie Plant ran the last ice cream van in the city with a proper chest freezer bolted in the back, and every evening at nine he parked under the bridge and sold ninety-nine lollies, tan and crunchy, each with a bite out of the top where he'd tested them for the cold. Nobody knew why he bit them. He said it was for the luck. On the Sunday the generator cut out with a bang, the van's bulb died, and the sky over the docks went red as a pillar box.
His mates from the warehouse came running, shouting that the timber yard was going up. Flames licked the hoardings and sparks spat over the rooftops like orange moths. Everyone expected Dessie to run for his life. He didn't. He hauled the freezer doors open, lifted out a single lolly, and walked straight into the glow, holding it up like a torch. The flames bent away from it, just for a breath, long enough for the fire crew to get a hose on the stacked planks.
Fair enough, you'll say. But I'll tell you what Dessie told my gran as he handed her the stick: fire is only hungry for what it can't have. That lolly was the last of the summer anyone could hold on to that night. Mind your fingers on the wrapper, love. It's still cold.
