Pink watercolour flamingo on a lower leg
Calf · Colour · Photo
A flamingo stands on one leg, its long neck curved into an S shape, with its head turned to the left. The bird is built from loose, painterly brushstrokes in magenta, pink and purple, with orange strokes on the legs and soft edges that fade in places. The skin is set against blurred green leaves and purple blossom, with the pink of the tattoo standing out clearly.

The flamingo had been standing in the rhododendron bed since before the mist lifted, and you had already decided it was not yours to move. Mrs Haverley's nephew had brought the travelling menagerie to the estate for the summer fête, and the bird was the only one that had not returned to its pen on Tuesday. You found it on one leg among the purple blooms, neck bent into that long question mark, watching you with one pale eye as though you were the one who had strayed.

You brought a bucket of brine shrimp from the potting shed and set it down at a careful distance. The bird considered the offer for some time. Its feet, orange as marmalade, did not so much as shift in the wet soil. Behind you the glasshouse door clanged, and Dorothy from the kitchen called out that the showman was at the gate with his van and a face like thunder. You told her to give you ten minutes, and she gave you five.
When the bird finally stepped down, it did so with the slow dignity of a guest leaving a dinner party early. It walked the length of the box hedge, paused by the sundial, and lifted its wings in a sudden spill of colour that made the leaves look grey by comparison. You stood holding the empty bucket and understood that the creature had never been lost at all. It had simply come to see the garden, the way you come to see a painting you have only read about.
The showman paid you a shilling for your trouble and took a jar of gooseberry jam besides. He did not ask how you had managed it, and you did not tell him it had never once been caught. That evening you walked the cinder path to the lake and found a single pink feather snagged on the reeds, bright as a brushstroke. You pressed it between the pages of the seed catalogue and left the window open a crack, just in case.
