Red betta fish on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A red betta fish swims across the forearm, with its long, flowing fins trailing towards the wrist. The body and fins are rendered with soft, painterly shading and feathered edges in several tones of crimson. The fish sits on pale skin against a blurred brown wooden background, with a grey knit sleeve visible at the top right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mother Ansa kept her fighting fish in a jam jar on the windowsill of the salt house, and every morning she tipped in a spoon of rainwater and told it the news from the harbour. The island of Carrow had little news that mattered, so the fish grew fat on gossip and its fins grew long.

One autumn the boats came back short. Her grandson Tobin, who was twelve and too proud to cry, carried the jar down to the shingle and said the fish had to swim out and fetch the men home, because that is what the old songs said red things were for. Ansa did not stop him. She had seen the fish flare its fins at its own reflection until the whole jar seemed lit from within.

He waded to his knees and tipped the water out. The fish hung in the grey surf for a breath, then turned, and its fins opened behind it like a torn sail, crimson in the failing light, trailing towards the rocks where the current bent. Tobin ran along the tideline after it until his shoes filled with sand.

The men came in on the evening tide, following a red glow on the water that nobody could name. Ansa kept the empty jar on the sill anyway. Some nights she swore she saw a ribbon of colour drifting past the window, and she never once told her grandson it was only the lamp in the house across the way.
