Red lightning bolt on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A single lightning bolt sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist, filled with solid red ink and edged with a blue outline that gives it a slight offset shadow. The bolt is a bold, simple shape with sharp angles, shown against plain skin and a stone-effect floor. The image is a close, straight-on photograph with the tattoo centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been sweeping grit off the forecourt since dawn, and by four the sky over the road had gone the colour of an old bruise. The lorry drivers had stopped coming in. Only the dust came, rolling across the bitumen in long fingers, and the radio on the counter kept repeating the same thing about a storm cell moving north.

The strike came at ten past five, one clean white crack that rattled the fridge doors and cut the power. Nell went out with a torch in her back pocket and found the mulga beside the pump still smoking. Beneath it the sand had turned to glass, a branching thing as thick as her wrist, running down into the ground like a root that had decided to become a warning.

She dug it out with a trowel over two hours, sweating under the work light the generator gave back. Her brother rang from Alice Springs to ask if she was alright, and she told him the storm had made a sculpture of itself. He laughed. She did not tell him the glass was rust-red at its heart, from the iron in the sand, with a blur of blue-grey where the cooling had gone uneven, as if the bolt had left a shadow on the ground behind it.

By dawn she had it wrapped in a feed sack in the back of the ute. She meant to take it to the museum in Coober Pedy. Instead she drove the empty road with the window down, and when a road train flashed its lights from the rise ahead she lifted one hand off the wheel and held it up, the way you do out here, the way the bolt would have looked to anyone watching from a long way off.
