Wonder Woman emblem on a wrist

Other · Colour · Photo

A gold, tiara-style emblem with red outlines sits in the centre of a blue ring decorated with small white stars. The shading is mostly flat, with the gold areas given slight tonal variation and the blue ring showing some texture. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist against a plain pale background.

Mr Fenwick wanted the ring blue as the sea off Cleethorpes on a bad Tuesday, and he wanted it finished before the Whitsun fair opened on the front. My first mix had too much turps and sank into the board in streaks, so I started again on the Thursday with a cold cup of tea by the tins and the paraffin stove ticking.

The emblem was the hard part. Fenwick's daughter had drawn it on the back of a gas bill: a gold shape with its wings folded in, like a bird that had decided against flying. She wanted red edges so it would show from the big wheel. I painted it three times. The first was too fat, the second looked like a tea towel, and the third she stood in front of for a long minute before she nodded once.

"Put your name underneath," she said. I didn't. A sign-writer's name is never the thing people look at, and I had never been much for being looked at anyway. I painted the stars last, flicking each one from the brush so it came off a little uneven, the way a tired hand would leave it.

On opening night a boy in the queue pointed up at the sign and asked his father if it was a real medal. Fenwick laughed and told him it was better than a medal, it was a promise. I stood at the back with my bag of brushes, and when the lamps came on the blue went nearly black and the gold went nearly white, and every crooked star caught the light and held it.
