Mrs Pennock had given Alfie until Thursday to draw something she could frame in the stationer's window on Church Street, and he had spent three nights at the counter with a bottle of red ink and nothing to show but spoiled card. The bell over the door had stopped ringing for the day, and the tea had gone cold beside his elbow.

On the Wednesday a grey tom came in out of the rain with a torn ear and sat on the proofing press as though he had paid for it. Alfie watched the animal's profile, the ridge of the skull, the two small points of its ears, and without lifting his nib he let the line run. It curved down into a heart, then folded back on itself so the cat's head sat inside the right-hand side of the shape, the stroke never leaving the paper.

Mrs Pennock held the card up to the lamp for a long while and said nothing. "You never lifted the pen," she said at last. "No." "Then it isn't a picture of a cat. It's a picture of a cat that intends to stay." She turned the card over and found his abandoned pencil sketch beneath it, a heart with nothing inside at all.

The next morning the grey tom was sitting on the step directly under the window, as if he had been posed there. Alfie propped the shop door open that night, and the cat walked in past the lamp and the spoiled card, looking entirely pleased with the arrangement.
