Fox head outline tattoo on the torso

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A fox head drawn as a bold outline with a flat pale centre and dark grey shading along the edges, giving a raised, three-dimensional look. The fox has pointed ears, angular eyes and a jagged lower jaw. The design is shown close up and centred on smooth skin with soft natural lighting.

Sit closer to the grate where I can see your faces, and leave that poker alone, our Tommy. It's a fox's business to be sly and yours to be still. You all know the old headgear at Hollin Pit, the one with the jagged top like a rotten set of teeth. Well, the winter the roof came in on the east drift, Ned Carrick went down after the trapped men with his lamp gone dim and nothing but the dark to tell him which way was up.

Then something trotted out of the blackness ahead of him. Thin and quick, with ears pointed like cut slate and eyes narrowed to two hard slits. It stopped at every junction and looked back over its shoulder, patient as a schoolmaster, until Ned understood it wanted to be followed. Its tail never once touched the wet timbers. Where it went, the air tasted of clean rain, and the coal dust settled as if somebody had laid a cloth over it.

They came out on the far side of the fall with three men alive and blinking. Ned turned to thank his guide, but the passage was empty except for a print pressed into the dust, the toes sharp as arrowheads, leading back the way they had come. Next morning the overman found a charcoal outline scrawled on the pit wall beside the cage, a fox's head with a grin of jagged teeth, drawn by no hand anyone could name. Ned never claimed he was led, mind. He said he was followed. And to this day, when the cage bell rings below the wheel with nobody there to ring it, the old hands swear they hear something small laughing in the shaft.
