Red lips with teeth on upper back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a pair of red lips with the upper teeth visible and the lower lip caught between them. Soft shading and bright highlights give the lips a glossy, three-dimensional finish, with darker red and near-black tones in the mouth corners and folds. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper back, with the neck and shoulders visible at the top of the frame and the rest of the body cropped out.

By the third cart of the morning Marta had her lower lip caught between her teeth again, and Inspector Hrubý could see it from his booth. Everyone who came up the valley road wore that look when they had something in the back they meant to keep quiet about.

The rule at Kessel Bridge was older than the customs house, and nobody had ever written it down. A traveller could carry what they liked across so long as they said nothing until the last plank was behind them. Speak early and the river took the words, and the goods went to the water with them. Hrubý had kept the post for thirty years and never lost a word that was given to the river. He kept a tally in a tin box under the desk: sugar, lace, a clockwork hare, and one wedding ring that a widow had held in her mouth all the way over.

Marta's cart held lamp oil and a bundle of letters tied with red thread. She had bitten her lip until it stung, and when Hrubý leaned out and asked plainly what she carried, she shut her mouth on the answer and looked at him over the reins. He did not ask twice. He had seen letters tied like that before, in other hands, going the other way. He lifted the thread with one finger, read the top envelope without opening it, and stamped the manifest.

She was across before the noon bell. Hrubý opened the tin box, added nothing, and sat for a while with the lid up, listening to the water. Then he closed it and let the river have the rest of the morning.
