Red-orange stylised bird with swirling tail

Colour · Flash

The image shows a single drawn design of a stylised bird head with a sweeping, feather-like tail that ends in spiral curls. The linework is smooth and continuous, with the head and tail details formed by flowing curved strokes. The lines shift from deep red at the tail to orange and yellow near the head, set against a plain white background.

Maud had been told the furnace would take her thumbs before it taught her anything, so she kept them tucked under her apron while Eddie Lowther drew the first gather of molten glass from the pot. It glowed the colour of a brake light at dusk. "Don't blow it yet," he said. "Let it tell you what it wants to be."

For a month she made only curls. Tails, he called them, though they were nothing like tails: coils of amber rod pulled thin and twisted back on themselves until they hissed. Her first three cracked in the annealer overnight. The fourth held, and Eddie turned it under the lamp and said nothing, which from him was praise.

The bird came in March. She had been drawing it for weeks on the backs of invoices, a head with a flame for a crest, a body of feathers streaming out behind into those spirals. When she finally laid the gather on the marver and pressed the crest with tweezers, the orange bled into deep red at the tail as the glass cooled, the way it had on paper, only truer.

Eddie took it from the bench on the last Friday before the works closed for good. He held it to the window until the light came through the feathers. "Mind the tail," he said. "It'll outlive the rest of us if you let it." She did not cry until the van had gone, and then only a little, because the bird was still warm in her hands.
