Red poppy on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A single poppy in bloom, with its petals rendered in layered reds and a dark green centre, sits at the top of a long dark stem. The petals use soft blended shading and fine highlights to give a lifelike, painterly finish, and a faint green and brown wash fades out around the stem. The flower is placed near the centre of the frame against plain skin, with the stem running diagonally down the arm.

Mind the kettle, love, and pull that stool nearer, because the 6.40 is late again and I've got the time. This is about Walter Pell, who kept the lamps at Thornbury Junction the year the trains went full of boys. Every morning Walter walked the cinder bank below the signal box with a tin can, looking for nothing in particular. The ballast was black, the sleepers were black, and the only colour for a mile was the coat of the stationmaster's dog.

Then one June a single poppy came up between the rails of the down line, thin as a pencil and bold as a shout. Walter should have pulled it. Railway men pull anything that grows where it oughtn't, because roots lift the track. He stood over it with his hand on his cap and decided it could have one week. Then another. The stationmaster, a sour man called Ellery, said the flower was a nuisance and then, when the telegrams started coming in, stopped saying anything at all.
The telegrams came to the box in brown envelopes, and Walter carried them up the platform himself because he could not bear for a girl to do it. Every time he came back down, the poppy had opened a little further, its petals slack and red as a stop signal in the rain. By the autumn the bank was seeded with them, and Walter knew it was not the flower's fault that it kept coming back, any more than it was the boys'.
So if you're waiting on that late train, look at the verge by the lamp. Those are his. And when the 6.40 finally shows its light round the bend, you'll see the stems leaning out toward the rails as though they're still waiting for someone to step off.
